How to adjust the clearance of the pinion gear of the electric starter motor of the Carter 325C excavator

When installing the solenoid coil, adjust the pinion backlash. Adjustments can be made with the starter motor removed.
(1) As shown in Figure 3-1-84, install the coil without connector 3, which is used to connect the MOTOR connector (terminal) on the coil and the motor.
(2) Connect a battery with the same voltage as the coil to terminal 2 of the "SW" switch.
(3) Connect the other side of the battery to connector 3.
(4) Then, connect the wire from the coil connector (terminal) to the connector (terminal) of the grounding device, which is marked with The words "MOTOR". The pinion will move to where the crankshaft is and stay there until the battery is cut.
(5) Use the commutator to push the pinion towards the end to eliminate free movement.
(6) As shown in Figure 3-1-85, the pinion clearance 6 must be 9.1mm.

(7) To adjust the pinion clearance, remove the plug and turn the shaft nut 4.
(8) After completing the adjustment, install the plug over the axle nut 4 and the connector 3 between the MOTOR post on the coil and the starter motor.
