Correct Assembly of Universal DuoCone Seals Assembly and Installation Procedures
Correct Assembly of Universal DuoCone Seals Assembly and Installation Procedures 1. Clean any oil film, dust or other foreign matter from the following components:
◦ Rubber Toric Ring (2)
◦ Housing Bevel (4)
◦ Seal Ring Bevel (7)
◦ Housing Retaining Lip (3)
◦ Seal Retaining Lip (8)
◦ Seal Ring Housing (5)
Note: The seal has very sharp edges. Injury should be avoided by wearing protective gloves.
Use the cleaner in Tool (B) or isopropyl alcohol or other approved cleaner. Wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth. All components should be completely dry before continuing work.
Note: Be careful not to allow oil to come into contact with the rubber toric ring (2), housing bevel (4) or seal ring bevel (7) until both seals (1) are assembled in final position.
2. Place the rubber toric ring (2) onto the seal (1). Make sure the rubber toric ring is at the bottom of the seal bevel (7). The rubber toric ring must seat onto the retaining lip (8). The rubber toric ring must be straight inside the seal. The rubber toric ring must not be twisted.
Note: Handle the rubber toric ring with care. Nicks, cuts, and scratches can cause leaks
4. Install the rubber toric ring (2) onto the seal (1) using the installation tool (9). Lightly lubricate the lower portion of the rubber toric ring (2) with a suitable lubricant. Refer to "Acceptable assembly lubricants" in this document for more information.
Lubricate the rubber toric ring using the following steps: ◦ Wipe the seal with a lint-free cloth. ◦ Place a foam towel or pad in the bottom of the container. Saturate the towel or pad with lubricant. Immerse the rubber toric ring in the container.

5. Ensure that the lower part of the rubber toric ring (2) is still wet. Using the installation tool (9), press the seal (1) and rubber toric ring (2) straight against the seal housing (5). When pressing down on the smaller diameter toric ring, ensure that you apply sudden and even pressure. Press the rubber toric ring (2) under the housing retaining lip (3) that is part of the seal housing (5). Install the larger diameter rubber toric ring using the following steps:
◦ Push the rubber toric ring over the seal retaining lip on one side.
◦ Use a rubber hammer to tap the installation tool on the opposite side of the rubber toric ring. Keep tapping until the rubber toric ring slides over the housing seal retaining lip.
6. Use Tool (A) to check the assembly height (B) at four locations at 90 degrees. The height difference must not exceed 1.0 mm (0.04 in). Refer to Figure 6.
7. Never adjust the seal (1) by pushing or pulling it. Use the installation tool (9) to press the seal down.
8
The rubber toric ring (2) may be twisted during installation if the seal is not fully wetted or if the housing retaining lip (3) that is part of the seal housing (5) has burrs or fins. Misalignment, twisting and bulging of the rubber toric ring will cause damage to the DuoCone seal. If improper installation is suspected, remove the toric ring from the housing and repeat the installation process.
9
Wipe the seal face (6) which is part of the seal (1) with a lint-free cloth. No particles should remain on the sealing surface. A small piece of paper towel can separate the seal face and cause leakage. Note: The rubber toric ring (2) must not slip on the bevel of the seal (1) or the bevel of the seal housing (5). To prevent slipping, allow sufficient time for the lubricant to evaporate before continuing the procedure. Once the rubber toric ring is properly positioned, it can only roll on the bevel.

Apply a thin coat of clean oil to the entire face of the seal ring on one or both of the two seals. Use a lint-free cloth or brush to distribute the oil evenly. Be careful not to allow the oil to contact the rubber toric ring. Lubricate the seal faces with the same lubricant used in the assembly. The oil used in the assembly may have dye added to it. Lubricate the seal faces with the same lubricant that does not contain dye.
11. Make sure the two seal housings (5) are correctly aligned and concentric. Move the parts slowly and steadily.
Note: Do not press the seal and seal housing together suddenly. If the seal parts are pressed together suddenly, it may cause scratches or cracks on the seal parts.
12. After the parts are correctly in place, tighten the bolts.
Consequences of Improper Assembly
Slipping of the rubber toric ring on the housing bevel or seal bevel can cause uneven pressure on the seal surface. Uneven pressure on the seal surface can cause abrasions, scratches and leaks.
If the rubber toric ring slips locally on the seal ring, the toric ring will be twisted.
A rough toric ring may be distorted.
A warped seal will cause uneven bed force on the seal surface. A warped seal can also cause abrasions, scratches and leaks.
A twisted toric ring will oscillate when it rotates. An oscillating seal may allow dirt to enter the seal joint. This is caused by the suction effect caused by the oscillation of the toric ring.
The above image shows a misassembled toric ring. The upper housing is stationary. The lower housing rotates.
The figure above shows the same seal after the lower body has been rotated 180 degrees. At this point, high pressures will exist at points () and 0. These high pressure points can cause scratches on the toric ring - low pressures will exist at points () and (Y) which may cause leaks.
