How to detect and replace the ECM electronic control module of Caterpillar 325C excavator
NOTE: When inspecting, maintaining, testing, adjusting, and repairing this equipment, care must be taken not to lose fluid. Before opening any box or disassembling any

Before handling parts containing liquids, suitable containers should be prepared to collect the liquids. All liquids should be handled in compliance with local regulations. Keep all parts smooth and free of contamination. Contaminants can accelerate component wear and shorten their service life.

There are no moving parts in the electronic control module (ECM). Replacing the ECM costs a lot of
money and time. Follow the troubleshooting and troubleshooting procedures to determine if replacing
the ECM corrects the problem. Verify that the ECM is the cause of the failure. Note: Before replacing
the ECM, make sure the ECM is charged and correctly connected to the negative battery circuit. Please
refer to the "Testing of Power Supply Circuit" section. In order to determine whether the ECM is
faulty, an ECM for inspection can be used. Place the ECM used for inspection in the location of the
suspected ECM. Flash program the correct personality module (flash file) into the ECM for inspection.
Set parameters for normal operation. These parameters must match those of the suspected ECM. If the
ECM used for verification solves the problem, reconnect the suspected ECM to check if the fault
recurs. If the problem recurs, replace the ECM. NOTE: If a new ECM is not available, the ECM needs
to be removed from the non-working engine. Verify that the replacement ECM and personality module
interlocking code are compatible with the problematic ECM. Be sure to record the ECM parameters for
replacement on the "Parameter Worksheet". Use Caterpillar (Caterpillar) Electronic Technology (Cat
ET) "Copy Configuration/ECM Replacement" under the "Service" menu ECM replacement)" function.
If the personality module and engine application do not match, the engine will be damaged. Follow the
steps below to replace the ECM.

(1) Connect the Cat ET to the engine service tool connector.
(2) Print out the parameters on the Cat ET "Configuration" screen. If a printer is not available, record
all parameters. Note all logged diagnostic codes and logged event codes on the log sheet.

(3) Use the "Copy Configuration/ECM Replacement" function under the Cat ET "Service" menu.
Select "Load from ECM" to copy the suspect ECM's configuration.
NOTE: If "Copy Configura- tion (copy configuration)" function fails and the parameters are not
obtained in step (2), these parameters must be obtained from elsewhere. Some parameters are printed on
the engine data plate, but most parameters must be obtained from the factory.
(4) Remove the ECM.
1) Turn the key switch to the OFF/RESET position.
2) Disconnect the ECM J1/P1 and J2/P2 connectors.
3) Remove the fuel pipe from the ECM (if equipped). NOTE: Collect any fuel that may spill in a
suitable container. Clean any fuel spills immediately. Never allow dirt to enter the fuel system.
Thoroughly clean the area around the removed fuel system components. Place appropriate caps on the
removed fuel system components.
4) Remove the mounting bolts from the ECM.
5) Disconnect the ECM ground wire from the engine.
1) Use old mounting hardware to install the replacement ECM. The mounting hardware must be free of wear.
2) Reconnect the fuel line (if equipped).
3) Make sure the ECM mounting hardware is installed correctly. The fuel line should not pressurize the
ECM. Use rubber seals to protect the ECM from excessive vibration. The ECM should be able to settle
into the rubber seal. If the ECM cannot move slightly in the rubber seal, check to see if the fuel pipe is
not pushing against one side of the rubber seal to pull the ECM.
4) Install the ECM ground wire on the engine.
5) Connect back the ECM JI/PI and J2/P2 connectors. Tighten the hexagonal screws on the connector
to the correct tightening torque: 2.25N for the 40-pin connector. m, 70-pin connector is 6.0N·m.
(6) Flash program the personality module into the ECM. For the correct procedure, see the "Flash
Programming" section.
(7) If the replacement ECM is to be used for other purposes, Cat ET must be used in order to match the
engine application personalized module chain code.
(8) Configure ECM.
1) If the "Copy Configuration" procedure in step (3) is successful, please return to the "Copy Configu-
ration/ECM Replacement" and select "Program ECM (Program ECM)" and proceed to step (9).
2) If the "Copy Configuration" procedure is unsuccessful, please adjust the ECM parameters. The
parameters should be compatible with the parameters in step (2). Note: If the "Copy Configuration"
function fails and the parameters are not obtained in step (2), these parameters must be obtained from
somewhere else. Some parameters are printed on the engine data plate, but most parameters must be
obtained from the factory.
3) If necessary, adjust the engine monitoring system.

(9) Calibrate injection timing. See the Calibration of Engine Speed/Timing Sensor section.
(10) Check diagnostic codes and event codes.
